Immune Health: Small Habits, Big Impact 🦠

Let’s talk about supporting your immune system beyond taking vitamin C the second you feel a scratchy throat! Your immune health is influenced by your everyday habits, and a few targeted changes can make a meaningful difference. Some supplements have good evidence and should be considered, but the basics should be implemented first!

Here are 5 ways to give your immune system some extra support:

1. Feed your gut, not just your cravings. Your gut plays an important role in immune function! Aim to eat a variety of plant foods, including beans, lentils, oats, nuts, seeds, and colourful vegetables to nourish your gut microbiome. Fermented foods like yogurt with live cultures, kefir, and sauerkraut are great additions, too. Probiotic supplements may also be helpful in certain situations, but the right strain, dosage, and brand depend on your individual needs. Chat with your Naturopathic Doctor (ND) before starting one!

2. Prioritize protein at every meal. Your body needs protein to build antibodies and support immune cell function. Try incorporating eggs, Greek yogurt, fish, tofu, chicken, or legumes into breakfast and lunch, too, rather than saving most of your protein for dinner.

3. Stop treating sleep like a luxury. Consistently getting enough sleep helps your immune system function effectively. Aim for a regular sleep schedule and a wind-down routine that gives your brain a break from late-night scrolling.

4. Check your nutrient status. Vitamin D, vitamin B12, iron, and zinc all play important roles in immune function. Rather than guessing which supplements you need, consider appropriate bloodwork to assess nutrients like vitamin D and B12, along with other tests based on your symptoms and health history. Correcting deficiencies matters, but taking more than you need isn't necessarily better! TEST DON'T GUESS!

5. Move your body and get outside. Regular moderate exercise supports overall health and immune function. Try a brisk 20–30-minute walk, ideally during daylight hours, to combine movement with natural light exposure that can help regulate your sleep-wake rhythm.

The bottom line? There are several ways to support your immune system. Start with the basics, focus on consistency, and personalize your approach based on your needs.
