Breathe Easier This Ragweed Season With Acupuncture

By Daryl Fang

As summer begins to wind down, ragweed season starts to ramp up, one of the most common triggers of seasonal allergic rhinitis brings frustrating allergy symptoms for many people. If you experience seasonal allergies every year, now is the ideal time to start preparing before pollen levels reach their peak.

Common symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis include:

  • Sneezing

  • Itchy eyes and nose

  • Watery eyes

  • Nasal congestion or a runny nose

  • Skin irritation or rashes in some individuals

Research suggests that acupuncture may help reduce the severity and frequency of seasonal allergy symptoms by modulating inflammatory pathways and supporting immune regulation. Beginning treatment proactively in late July or early August, before peak pollen exposure, may provide the greatest benefit for individuals with recurring late-summer allergies.

Treatment involves the insertion of fine, sterile, single-use needles into carefully selected acupuncture points located along meridians on the hands, arms, face, head, legs, and feet. Point selection is individualized based on each person’s presentation and treatment goals.

Acupuncture can be used alongside conventional allergy treatments as part of a comprehensive approach to seasonal allergy management. It may help lessen the inflammatory response associated with ragweed exposure and improve overall comfort throughout allergy season. When provided by a registered acupuncturist, acupuncture is considered a safe and well-tolerated treatment option for seasonal allergy management.
