Three Important Nutrients for Preconception Care
Whether you’re actively trying to conceive (TTC) or just starting to think about it, preconception care lays the foundation for a healthy pregnancy and optimal fertility outcomes. Ideally, this care should begin at least 3 months prior to conception, as this is the approximate time it takes for both egg and sperm to fully mature. Supporting your body during this window can make a meaningful difference in hormone balance, egg and sperm quality, and overall reproductive health.
Here are 3 important nutrients to focus on during preconception care:
1. FOLATE
This B vitamin (B9) is essential for healthy brain and spinal cord development in the baby. It’s crucial for preventing neural tube defects, which can develop very early, often before pregnancy is confirmed or known. Folate also supports hormone balance and egg quality. Tip: Choose the methylated form, 5-MTHF, instead of folic acid, as it’s better absorbed and utilized in some individuals who have genetic variations affecting folate metabolism
2. VITAMIN D
Vitamin D is a very important hormonal vitamin and plays a vital role in reproductive health. Optimal vitamin D levels have been linked to higher pregnancy rates, more regular cycles, and improved egg quality. Maintaining adequate levels throughout pregnancy is also associated with lower risks of pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes. Unfortunately, the majority of the population in Canada is vitamin D deficient. Tip: Test don’t guess! I can test your vitamin D levels and tailor supplementation as needed to support optimal fertility outcomes.
3. IRON
Iron is a mineral that is essential for ovulation and overall pregnancy outcomes. It’s necessary for oxygen delivery and energy production, both of which are crucial for embryo development. Iron deficiency has been associated with reduced egg quality, increased risk of miscarriage, and overall poorer maternal and infant outcomes. Tip: Many factors influence iron absorption, such as the type of iron (heme vs. non-heme) and what you pair it with. Certain vitamins and minerals can enhance or inhibit iron uptake. Understanding these factors helps to ensure you’re actually getting the benefits from your supplements and diet.
Honourable mentions:
It was difficult to narrow this list down to just three nutrients. Other key nutrients that play important roles in preconception care include omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and CoQ10.
As a naturopathic doctor, I also address many other factors such as stress levels, sleep quality, lifestyle, diet, and environmental exposures to create an individualized plan that supports your fertility. And remember, preconception care isn’t for just one partner, both egg and sperm contribute equally. Supporting both partners can improve outcomes for conception and pregnancy.
Always consult with a healthcare professional before taking anything new. Proper dosing of these nutrients is essential, and I can help determine what’s right for your unique needs!
